title: Learn
description: Study with Ysra — notebooks made from your course files, cards with a daily review, practice exams that mark your answers, topics learned step by step, and a tutor that gives hints before answers.

**Learn** turns Ysra into a tutor. Give it your course files and it makes a
notebook you can study from: a guide for each chapter, cards to review every
day, and practice exams that mark your answers against the course. Or name a
topic, and Ysra plans short sessions that take you from what you already know
to solid. This page is for students, and for anyone learning something new
for work.

Open **Learn** from the rail in the web app or the desktop app. The phone app doesn't have Learn.

## What's in Learn

| Part | What it is | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| **Notebooks** | A notebook per course, made from your files. Each chapter gets a **Guide**, **Cards** and **Practice**, all citing the pages they come from. | [Study with a notebook](notebooks.md) |
| **Today's review** | The cards due today, across your notebooks. Reviewing is free. | [Review your cards](notebooks.md#review-your-cards) |
| **Topics** | A topic you want to learn, in short planned sessions: an explanation, an exercise, then you teach it back. | [Learn a topic](topics.md) |
| **Tutor chats** | A chat linked to a notebook, where the tutor guides you with hints. | [Ask the tutor](notebooks.md#ask-the-tutor) |
| **Learn mode** | A switch in any Ask conversation. The tutor gives hints and lets you try before it shows the answer. | [Learn mode in Ask](topics.md#learn-mode-in-ask) |

## Get started in three steps

<div class="steps" markdown>

### Upload your course files

Put your lecture notes, slides or textbook chapters in **Library → Files**,
or upload them straight into a new notebook. PDFs, Word and PowerPoint files,
pictures and text files all work. See [Files you can upload](../workspace/files.md).

### Make a notebook

In **Learn**, choose **New notebook**. Give it a **Name** (for example
*Thermodynamics S3*), optionally a **Subject** and your **Level**, pick its
**Course files**, and choose **Make the notebook**.

### Study a chapter

Open the notebook and pick a chapter. Write its **Guide** to read it, make
its **Cards** to review it, and take a **Practice exam** to test yourself.
Come back each day to **Review now**.

## How Ysra keeps to your course

- **Everything cites the page.** Guides, cards and exam corrections point to
the file and page they come from, so you can check them against your
  course.
- **Only what's on the page.** When a point or a term can't be found on the
page it claims to come from, Ysra leaves it out rather than guess.
- **Your level.** Explanations follow the level you set for the notebook.

## What it costs

| Action | Credits |
|---|---|
| A chapter's **Guide** | About 1–3 |
| A chapter's **Cards** | About 1–3 |
| A **Practice** exam | About 2–5 |
| Reviewing cards, and the daily reminder | Free |
| Marking an exam answer, a topic session, Learn mode in Ask | Like any answer in Ask |

See [Credits and usage](../workspace/credits.md).
